Understand the principal sonography and cardiovascular credentialing pathways—and choose the certification that matches your education, clinical experience, and career goals.

Start with the official eligibility rules. Credentialing requirements can change, and similar credentials may use different education, clinical-experience, documentation, ethics, and examination pathways. Always confirm your eligibility directly with the credentialing organization before applying or paying an examination fee.

ARDMS — American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography

ARDMS credentials are widely used across diagnostic medical sonography. The Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) examination assesses ultrasound physics and instrumentation. For several credentials, candidates must pass SPI and an appropriate specialty examination within the organization’s required time period.

Major ARDMS pathways

  • RDMS — Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer: specialties include Abdomen (AB), Breast (BR), Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN), and Pediatric Sonography (PS).
  • RDCS — Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer: cardiac pathways include Adult Echocardiography, Pediatric Echocardiography, and Fetal Echocardiography.
  • RVT — Registered Vascular Technologist: designed for vascular ultrasound practice.
  • RMSKS — Registered in Musculoskeletal Sonography: designed for qualified musculoskeletal-sonography professionals.

ARRT — American Registry of Radiologic Technologists

ARRT offers certification and registration in Sonography and Vascular Sonography. Sonography uses a primary eligibility pathway. Vascular Sonography may be available through primary or postprimary requirements, depending on the applicant’s background. ARRT also offers Breast Sonography through a postprimary pathway requiring an approved supporting credential.

  • Sonography: review ARRT education, ethics, and examination requirements.
  • Vascular Sonography: confirm whether the primary or postprimary pathway applies to you.
  • Breast Sonography: review the supporting-discipline and postprimary requirements carefully.

CCI — Cardiovascular Credentialing International

CCI focuses on cardiovascular technology and offers several credentials relevant to cardiac and vascular sonographers. Each examination has its own qualification pathways and supporting-document requirements.

  • RCS — Registered Cardiac Sonographer: adult echocardiography.
  • RCCS — Registered Congenital Cardiac Sonographer: pediatric and adult congenital cardiac ultrasound.
  • RVS — Registered Vascular Specialist: vascular ultrasound.
  • RPhS — Registered Phlebology Sonographer: venous ultrasound and phlebology.
  • ACS — Advanced Cardiac Sonographer: an advanced-career credential for appropriately qualified echocardiography professionals.

Which Path May Fit Your Goal?

  • General abdomen, small parts, OB/GYN or pediatric ultrasound: investigate the ARDMS RDMS pathway and the ARRT Sonography pathway.
  • Adult echocardiography: compare ARDMS cardiac credentialing with CCI RCS requirements.
  • Pediatric or congenital echocardiography: compare the applicable ARDMS cardiac pathway with CCI RCCS.
  • Vascular ultrasound: compare ARDMS RVT, ARRT Vascular Sonography, and CCI RVS based on your education and eligibility.
  • Breast sonography: compare ARDMS Breast and ARRT Breast Sonography pathways.
  • Musculoskeletal sonography: review ARDMS RMSKS eligibility and examination requirements.
